Every year as fall family photography season approaches, I start hearing some version of the same question:
“When will the leaves be at peak color?”
And I get it.
When you picture fall family photos, you probably picture golden trees, warm colors and that perfect October backdrop.
But here’s something that might make scheduling your family photos a whole lot easier:
You do not need peak fall color to have beautiful fall family photos.
In fact, waiting for that one supposedly “perfect” week can sometimes make planning your session harder than it needs to be.
Peak Fall Color Is Not an Appointment on the Calendar
I wish I could tell you exactly when the trees in Naperville and the surrounding suburbs will turn every year.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature has refused to share her calendar with me.
Fall color depends on temperature, rainfall, wind and plenty of other factors completely outside our control.
One year, a location may be gorgeous and colorful in early October. The next year, those same trees might still be mostly green.
And once the leaves finally change?
A windy or rainy day can take a beautiful tree from full fall color to practically bare very quickly.
That’s why I never recommend choosing your family photo date based entirely on trying to predict peak foliage.
September Family Photos Are Seriously Underrated
September sometimes gets overlooked because everyone is waiting for “fall.”
Meanwhile, September is quietly over there being absolutely gorgeous.
The landscape is still lush and green. The evenings are beautiful. Locations have tons of texture and life, and we can start incorporating warmer fall tones through your clothing without needing orange leaves everywhere around you.
It also gives you a major advantage:
You’re getting your family photos done before October becomes October.
If you have school-aged kids, you know exactly what I mean.
Sports. Activities. School events. Halloween. Homecoming. Weekend plans. And somehow there are approximately 47 things happening every Saturday.
Scheduling your photos a little earlier can make the entire experience feel much easier.
Early October Gives You the Best of Both Worlds
If you love a traditional fall look but don’t necessarily need every tree to be orange, early October can be fantastic.
You may get a combination of green trees, early color changes, grasses and warmer fall textures.
And honestly?
That variety can photograph beautifully.
Your gallery doesn’t need to scream FALL!!! in every single image to feel seasonal.
I would much rather give you a beautiful, varied gallery that feels like your family than spend an entire session trying to position everyone in front of the one orange tree at the location.
A beautiful fall gallery shouldn’t depend on finding one colorful tree and placing every family directly in front of it.
There. I said it.
Your Family Matters More Than the Leaves
This is the biggest thing I want families to remember when choosing a session date.
The background is part of your photos.
Your family is the reason for them.
Your kids laughing together, your toddler snuggling into you, the way your family interacts and all those little expressions you recognize immediately are what will matter when you look back at these photographs years from now.
You probably aren’t going to say:
“I really wish that tree had been 17% more orange.”
You’re going to notice how little your kids were.
That’s why I recommend choosing your session date based first on what works well for your family.
If You Have Little Kids, Bedtime Wins Over Fall Color
This one deserves its own section.
If you have babies, toddlers or younger children, please consider their schedules when choosing your fall family session.
A perfectly colorful location is not particularly helpful if your three-year-old normally goes to bed at 7:00 and we’re trying to start family photos when they’re exhausted.
Sometimes an earlier date gives us a much better session time for your children.
And happy, rested kids will make a much bigger difference in your gallery than the exact color of the trees behind them.
I would choose the date and time that sets your family up for success every single time.
Different Locations Give Us Different Fall Looks
Another reason you don’t need to obsess over peak color is that your location plays a huge role in the overall look of your gallery.
Around Naperville, Plainfield and the surrounding suburbs, we have so many different options.
Cantigny gives us beautiful landscaping, architecture and tons of variety throughout the season.
The Naperville Riverwalk offers a completely different look with bridges, water, pathways, greenery and an almost urban-meets-natural feel.
Other locations throughout Naperville and Plainfield give us everything from open fields and grasses to trees, trails, water and more natural scenery.
Some locations are beautiful because of the leaves.
Others are beautiful regardless of what the leaves are doing.
That’s why location planning is part of the experience. We’ll choose a setting that works with the look you want instead of crossing our fingers and hoping one particular tree cooperates.
What You Wear Has a Huge Impact Too
If you want your gallery to feel like fall, your clothing can do a lot of the work.
Creams, warm neutrals, denim, muted greens, browns, soft blues and layered textures can immediately give your photographs that cozy seasonal feeling.
You don’t need to match your clothing to orange and red trees.
Actually, please don’t.
The goal is to coordinate with the environment, not camouflage yourselves into it.
Styling and planning support are included with your session, so you don’t have to figure this out alone.
Don't Wait So Long for “Perfect” That You Miss Fall Completely
This is the part where I give you a tiny nudge.
Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photographers.
The most popular dates fill quickly, especially weekends.
If you wait to see when peak fall color is predicted before booking, you may discover that the dates and times that actually work for your family are already gone.
And remember, a foliage prediction is still just that: a prediction.
You could wait for the supposed perfect weekend only to get rain, wind or suddenly bare trees.
If family photos are important to you this fall, choose a date that works for your family and get it on the calendar.
We can handle the rest.
So, When Is the Best Time for Fall Family Photos in Naperville?
There really isn’t one perfect week.
September is beautiful.
Early October is beautiful.
Peak fall color is beautiful.
Even later fall can be beautiful in the right location.
The best time for your family photos is when we can choose a great location, everyone can arrive without rushing and your kids are set up to actually enjoy the experience.
Because the leaves are lovely.
But they aren't the story.
Your family is.
