If you've been looking at fall mini sessions

around Naperville or Plainfield, you've probably noticed something:

“Mini session” can mean a lot of different things.

Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. Twenty minutes. Thirty minutes.

So when I say my fall mini sessions are 30 minutes, you might be wondering:

Is that actually enough time for family photos?

For most immediate families, yes.

And the 30 minutes is very intentional.

Thirty Minutes Goes Faster Than You Think

Thirty minutes sounds like plenty of time until you're getting an entire family out of the car, fixing someone's hair, convincing a toddler that we're actually going to have fun and giving everyone a few minutes to settle in.

Kids aren't robots. I don't expect them to hop out of the car, stand exactly where I put them and immediately give me natural smiles.

They usually need a minute.

That's one of the biggest reasons I don't try to squeeze a family session into 10 or 15 minutes.

Could I technically take some pictures in that amount of time?

Sure.

But that's very different from giving your family enough time to relax

so I can photograph the personalities and connections you're actually here for.

Your Kids Don't Need to “Perform” for 30 Minutes

Here's something that surprises a lot of parents:

Your kids don't need to cooperate perfectly for the entire session.

Actually, I don't expect them to.

We're going to move around. We'll play. We'll walk. We'll let them be silly. If someone needs a minute, we'll adjust.

I'm not spending 30 minutes asking everyone to stand still, look at me and smile.

That would feel like a very long 30 minutes for all of us.

Instead, I'm guiding your family through different interactions while also making sure we get those classic photographs everyone wants.

The goal is to keep things moving so your kids don't have time to decide that family photos are officially the worst thing that's ever happened to them.

What Can We Actually Get in 30 Minutes?

Quite a bit.

During a typical family mini session, I'm working toward a mix of photographs rather than spending our entire time trying to create one perfect family portrait.

We'll photograph your whole family together, the kids together, individual children when it makes sense, parents with the kids and plenty of those less posed moments in between.

Every family is different, so I'm not working from a rigid checklist.

If your toddler needs a little extra time with Mom, we work with that.

If your kids are ready to run and play immediately, great.

Thirty minutes gives us enough breathing room to follow their lead while still creating a varied gallery.

Why Mini Sessions Have Set Locations

One of the reasons a 30-minute mini works so well is because I've already taken some of the decisions out of the equation.

My fall mini sessions are held at predetermined locations and scheduled on specific dates,

primarily in the Naperville and Plainfield area.

I know where we're meeting. I know where I want to photograph you. I know how I want to use the space.

We're not spending part of your session wandering around trying to figure out where to go next.

You choose the mini date and location that works best for your family, and I've handled the rest.

When 30 Minutes Might NOT Be Enough

A mini session isn't meant to replace a full family session for every family.

If you want a very relaxed pace, have children who typically need significant time to warm up, want more variety, have a long list of specific combinations or want the flexibility to choose your own location, I'd recommend a full family session instead.

Full sessions give us more time to let things unfold naturally

and more flexibility when we're planning where your session will take place.

They're also the better choice if you know you want more than a smaller curated collection of images.

My minis include 10 final images, while a full family session is designed for families who want the complete experience and gallery.

What About Extended Family?

Fall mini sessions are designed for small immediate families.

If you're hoping to include grandparents, cousins, multiple households or a larger extended family group,

you'll need an extended family session instead.

Trying to squeeze multiple family groupings into 30 minutes isn't going to give anyone the experience or gallery they were hoping for.

And nobody wants to spend their family photos speed-running through Grandma with the grandkids, cousins together, each individual family and one giant group photo before the clock runs out.

So, Is 30 Minutes Really Enough?

For the right family and the right expectations, absolutely.

It's enough time to settle in.

It's enough time to move and play.

It's enough time to get the family portrait for the holiday card AND the little moments that feel more like your actual family.

But it's also short enough that we're usually wrapping things up before younger kids completely lose interest.

That's the sweet spot.

My fall mini sessions aren't designed to cram a full hour of photography into 30 minutes.

They're designed specifically to be a 30-minute experience.

And there's a difference.
