Mini vs. Full Family
Photography Session:
Which Is Right for Your Family?
One of the most common questions I hear from families is:
Do we really need a full family session, or would a mini session be enough?**
And the answer is... it depends.
Not on how photogenic your family is. Not on whether your kids are "good at pictures." And honestly, not even entirely on your budget. The biggest difference between a mini vs. full family photography session is the experience you want, how much time your family needs, and how much variety you'd love to have when your gallery arrives.
I offer both mini and full family sessions throughout Naperville, Plainfield and Chicago's southwest suburbs because different families genuinely need different things. Here's how to figure out which one is right for yours.
What Is a Mini Family Session?
My mini family sessions are 30 minutes, which is actually plenty of time for many families.
These sessions are designed to be fun, relaxed and efficient. We aren't trying to cram an entire full session into half the time. Instead, we focus on creating a beautiful variety of family images while keeping things moving.
After your session, you'll receive a gallery of approximately 30 edited images and choose your 10 favorites to download.
You'll still receive my help before your session with styling, planning and preparing your family.
Mini does not mean "you're on your own until picture day."
It simply means we're working within a shorter session and a smaller final collection.
Who Is a Mini Session Best For?
A 30-minute mini can be a great fit if:
Your children are comfortable warming up quickly
You update family photos regularly
You mainly want a few beautiful photographs for your walls, holiday cards or yearly albums
Your kids are a little older and don't need as much time to settle in
Your family has done professional photos before and everyone generally knows what to expect
You love having updated family photos but don't necessarily need a huge gallery
For example, if you have two school-aged kids who are pretty easygoing in front of the camera and you're looking for an updated family photo plus some individual images of the kids, a mini session will probably give us exactly what we need.
They're also great for families who photograph every year and don't need to document quite as much at each session.
When I'd Recommend a Full Family Session
Sometimes, more time really does make a difference. A full family session gives us the freedom to slow down.
There is more time for kids to warm up, more time for movement and play,
and more opportunities for the little in-between moments that tend to become some of my favorite photographs.
We can walk, explore, change things up and let your family settle into the experience without watching the clock quite as closely.
If your toddler needs five minutes to investigate a stick before deciding I'm trustworthy? We have time.
If someone needs a break? Totally fine.
If your kids start being hilariously themselves once they forget we're taking pictures? Even better.
That extra time creates space for connection and variety, which is really what a full family session is all about.
Full Sessions Give Us More Variety
During a full session, I'm not only thinking about getting "the family picture."
I want the whole story.
Everyone together. Mom with the kids. Dad with the kids. Each child individually. Siblings together. Mom and Dad together. The quiet moments. The silly ones. The running, cuddling, laughing and everything that naturally happens in between.
Because we have more time, we can create a gallery that feels much more complete.
And instead of choosing 10 photographs, your complete gallery is included.
You don't have to narrow down your favorites and leave photographs behind. They're yours.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate for Photos?
First, I don't expect them to.
Kids aren't supposed to walk into a family photography session, stand exactly where they're told and smile perfectly at a stranger
for an hour. That's not how kids work, and it's definitely not how I expect my sessions to work.
But this is one area where choosing between a mini and full family session can matter.
If you have a shy child who takes a while to warm up, a toddler who wants to explore everything, multiple young children, or simply know your family does better when nobody feels rushed, I'd lean toward the full session.
We have room to work with your kids instead of expecting them to immediately work for the camera.
For families with very young children, that flexibility can be incredibly valuable.
Do Both Sessions Include Styling and Planning?
Yes!
Whether you choose a mini or full family session, I'll help you prepare.
You'll receive guidance on what to wear, how to coordinate your family's clothing without looking overly matched,
what to expect during your session and how to prepare your kids.
I'll also help you choose a location that works well for the look you love and your family's needs.
I photograph families throughout Naperville, Plainfield and Chicago's southwest suburbs, and location plays a big role in the overall feel of your photographs. We'll make sure we're choosing somewhere that photographs beautifully and makes sense for your family.
You aren't booking a time slot and being sent off to figure out the rest yourself.
A Quick Real-Life Comparison
Let's say you have two kids, ages 8 and 11.
They have done family photos before, they're comfortable around the camera
and you mainly want an updated family picture, a sibling photo and a few individual portraits.
I'd probably tell you to book the mini.
Thirty minutes is likely plenty of time, and you'll walk away with a beautiful updated collection
without booking more session than you really need.
Now let's say you have three kids who are 6, 3 and 18 months.
Your toddler wants to run. Your three-year-old needs time to decide whether they like me.
You'd love photographs of the entire family, each child individually, siblings together,
each parent with the kids and some images of just the two of you.
Book the full session.
That doesn't mean your kids are difficult.
It means we're giving them the time and space to be kids while still creating everything you want from your session.
Or maybe your children are older, but you haven't had professional family photographs taken in five years.
I'd still recommend the full session.
This isn't just an annual update anymore.
We're documenting an entire season of your family, and I'd want the time and gallery space to do that well.
Mini vs. Full Family Photography Session:
The Bottom Line
Neither session is "better."
They're designed for different needs.
Choose a mini family session if you want something quick and easy, your family photographs regularly,
your kids tend to warm up quickly and 10 final images feel like plenty.
Choose a full family session if you want a more relaxed pace, have younger or slower-to-warm-up children,
want more combinations and variety, or don't want to choose which photographs to leave behind.
And if you're still not sure?
Tell me about your family.
How old are your kids?
When was your last family session?
What do you want to walk away with this time?
I'll happily point you toward the session I think will serve your family best, even if that's the smaller one.
Because the goal isn't to talk you into more than you need.
It's to make sure you choose the experience that lets us create photographs that actually feel like your family.
